Manuela Bacelar

Manuela está em Paris em 1963. Assiste ao filme Sonhos de uma noite de Verão de Jiˇrí Trnka. A marca deste realizador de animação checo leva-a a Praga e a um curso de ilustração na UMPRUM – Escola Superior de Artes Aplicadas, onde Trnka é regente do curso. Sete anos na Checoslováquia mudarão o curso da sua vida e também o da ilustração portuguesa para crianças. Além da influência que as artes visuais do leste europeu imprimem na sua obra, Manuela adquire também uma consciência política e cívica temperada no contexto de uma escola cujo corpo docente era opositor a um opressivo regime comunista. Nascida em Coimbra, em 1943, Manuela vai fixar-se no Porto em 1971, de onde irradiará uma vasta obra de ilustração para crianças em livros, cartazes e filmes de animação.

A obra gráfica de Manuela, sobretudo no fecho da década de 80, tem a maior importância na evolução da edição para crianças em Portugal. Manuela reintroduziu uma qualidade pictórica e poética que andava arredada da ilustração para crianças desde os anos 60. A densidade matérica do seu trabalho, a dimensão onírica dos cenários, herança segura do curso de pintura na Escola de Artes Decorativas Soares dos Reis e da formação na Checoslováquia, marcariam um legado ser seguido por ilustradores da geração seguinte, como Teresa Lima, Henrique Cayatte ou André Letria. A inquietação gráfica de Manuela só tem paralelo com a obra da maior ilustradora da geração anterior, Maria Keil.

Em 1989 Manuela é surpreendida pela notícia de que vai ganhar o galardão mais importante da ilustração para crianças, a Maçã de Ouro da Bienal Internacional de Bratislava (hoje capital da Eslováquia). O prémio é atribuído às ilustrações do livro Silka, uma curiosa lenda nórdica que a escritora Ilse Losa, cúmplice habitual de Manuela, vai contar à sua maneira e para a qual Manuela fará belíssimas ilustrações que cosntituirão uma referência absoluta na sua obra. A Maçã terá um sabor amargo: Manuela não tem dinheiro para a viagem e o prémio será recebido por uma amiga. Silka ganhará ainda em Portugal o Prémio Gulbenkian de Ilustração, no ano seguinte.

Manuela ilustrou mais de 90 livros para crianças a que se podem juntar meia dúzia de manuais escolares e alguns raros livros orientados para o público adulto. Duas das suas obras mais célebres têm sido reeditadas ao longo dos anos. Em 2017, Os ovos misteriosos têm a sua 22.ª edição e AEIOU, História das cinco vogais, a sua 13.ª. A série Tobias continua a ser reimpressa regularmente. Tem obras traduzidas na França, Bélgica, Dinamarca, Líbano, Marrocos e Espanha.

Manuela is in Paris in 1963. She watches the film A Midsummer Night's Dream by Jiˇrí Trnka. The brand of this Czech animation director takes her to Prague and an illustration course at UMPRUM – Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design, where Trnka is the course leader. Seven years in Czechoslovakia will change the course of her life and also that of Portuguese illustration for children’s books. In addition to the influence that Eastern European visual arts have on her work, Manuela also acquires a tempered political and civic consciousness in the context of a school whose teaching staff opposed an oppressive communist regime. Born in Coimbra in 1943, Manuela moved to Porto in 1971, from where she produced a vast body of work of illustration for children in books, posters and animated films. Manuela's graphic work, especially at the end of the 80s, has the greatest importance in the evolution of publishing for children in Portugal. Manuela reintroduced a pictorial and poetic quality that had been far removed from illustration for children since the 60s. The material density of her work, the dreamlike dimension of the scenes, a certain legacy of the painting course at the Escola de Artes Decorativas Soares dos Reis and her training in Czechoslovakia, would mark a legacy to be followed by illustrators of the next generation, such as Teresa Lima, Henrique Cayatte or André Letria. Manuela's graphic restlessness is only paralleled by the work of the greatest illustrator of the previous generation, Maria Keil. In 1989 Manuela is surprised by the news that she will win the most important award in children’s illustration, the Golden Apple at the International Biennial in Bratislava (nowadays the capital of Slovakia). The prize is awarded to the illustrations in the book Silka, a curious Nordic legend that the writer Ilse Losa, Manuela's usual accomplice, will tell in her own way and for which Manuela will create incredibly beautiful illustrations that will constitute an absolute reference in her work. The Apple will have a bitter taste: Manuela can’t afford the trip and the prize will be received by a friend. Silka would also win the Gulbenkian Illustration Prize in Portugal the following year. Manuela has illustrated more than 90 books for children to which can be added half a dozen school textbooks and a few rare books aimed at an adult audience. Two of her most celebrated works have been reissued over the years. In 2017, The Mysterious Eggs had its 22nd edition and AEIOU, History of the Five Vowels, its 13th. The Tobias series continues to be reprinted regularly. Her works have been translated in France, Belgium, Denmark, Lebanon, Morocco and Spain.
