Award

This award is suggested by the Biennial’s artistic direction and the Guimarães City Hall. To the consecrated artist is recognized great artistic quality in the entirety of his work, his creativity and innovation in the broader fields of illustration. The BIG Career Award 2025 is Cristina Sampaio. The artist will have an exhibition of his most representative works. The BIG Career Prize award 2025 has a monetary value of € 10,000.

Cristina Sampaio

Começou a trabalhar como ilustradora e cartoonista para revistas e jornais em 1986 e, em 1987, fez a primeira de mais de 20 ilustrações para livros infantis. Os jornais para os quais trabalhou incluem o Público, O Independente e o Expresso em Portugal, bem como jornais internacionais como o The New York Times e o The Boston Globe nos EUA, o Kleine Zeitung e o Die Presse na Áustria e o Alternatives économiques e o Courrier International em França. Em 1998, criou o cenário para o musical infantil Bom Dia, Benjamim!, uma apresentação teatral realizada no Centro Cultural de Belém, baseada numa série de televisão de sucesso. É membro da Cartooning for Peace. Cristina Sampaio produziu apresentações multimédia para a Ciência Viva e outros e, mais recentemente, trabalhou com o coletivo Spam Cartoon na produção de curtas-metragens animadas para a SIC Notícias e a RTP3.

Cristina Sampaio recebeu vários prémios pelo seu trabalho, incluindo o Prémio de Excelência da Society for News Design em 2002, 2005 e 2009, o Prémio Stuart para Cartoon (2006 e 2010), o Primeiro Prémio para cartoon editorial do World Press Cartoon (2007), onde também recebeu duas menções honrosas em 2009 e 2015, e a Medalha de Prata da Society for News Design de Pamplona em 2009. Em 2009, o Festival de Banda Desenhada de Amadora atribuiu-lhe o prémio de melhor ilustração infantil pelo livro Canta o Galo Gordo. Em 2023, foi uma das 16 finalistas do Prémio Europeu de Cartoon.

Cristina Sampaio

She began working as an illustrator and cartoonist for magazines and newspapers in 1986, and in 1987 did the first of over 20 illustrations of children's books. The newspapers she has worked for have included Público, O Independente and Expresso in Portugal, as well as international papers such as The New York Times and The Boston Globe in the US, Kleine Zeitung and Die Presse in Austria and Alternatives économiques and Courrier International in France. In 1998, she created the set design for the children's musical Bom Dia, Benjamim!, a theatrical presentation performed at the Belém Cultural Centre near Lisbon, based on a successful television series. She is a member of Cartooning for Peace. Sampaio has produced multimedia presentations for Ciência Viva and others and, more recently, has worked with the Spam Cartoon collective to produce animated shorts for SIC Notícias and RTP3. Sampaio has received many awards for her work including the Society for News Design Award of Excellence in 2002, 2005 and 2009, the Prémio Stuart Award for Cartoons (2006 and 2010), a First Prize for an editorial cartoon from the World Press Cartoon (2007), where she also received two honourable mentions in 2009 and 2015, and the Society for News Design of Pamplona Silver Medal 2009. In 2009, the Amadora Comic Strip Festival awarded her the prize for best children's illustration for the book Canta o Galo Gordo (The Fat Rooster sings). In 2023 she was one of 16 finalists for the European Cartoon Award.
