Enquanto o quadrado está intimamente ligado ao homem, à arquitetura e às estruturas racionais, o círculo aproxima-se do sonho, do eterno e do natural. Está presente nos gestos mais instintivos — como o primeiro desenho de uma criança — e em fenómenos simples da natureza, como os anéis de uma árvore ou as ondulações na água. Nesta oficina trocaremos o tradicional formato rectângular por um circular. Será dado a cada participante um círculo em papel com o intuito de criar uma ilustração que explore o círculo como espaço compositivo, simbólico e narrativo. A proposta convida a experimentar novas formas de narrar visualmente usando as sugestões (relógio, prato, buraco, lua, poço, monóculo, etecetera) e potencialidades do formato.
Ilustrar no círculo
While the square is intimately linked to humanity, architecture, and rational structures, the circle is closer to dreams, to the eternal and natural. It is present in the most instinctive gestures—like a child's first drawing—and in simple natural phenomena, such as the rings of a tree or ripples in water. In this workshop, we will exchange the traditional rectangular format for a circular one. Each participant will be given a paper circle with the intention of creating an illustration that explores the circle as a compositional, symbolic, and narrative space. The proposal invites experimentation with new ways of visually narrating using the suggestions (clock, plate, hole, moon, well, monocle, etc.) and potential of the format.
Sebastião Peixoto nasceu em 1972, em Braga. Licenciado em pintura pela Faculdade de Belas-Artes do Porto e mestre em ensino de Artes Visuais pela FBAUP/FPCEUP. Trabalha como ilustrador freelancer, colaborando com várias editoras nacionais e estrangeiras. Publicou trabalhos em vários fanzines, revistas e jornais, e participa regularmente em exposições colectivas de pintura e ilustração em Portugal e no estrangeiro. Em 2014, venceu uma Menção Honrosa no 7º Encontro Internacional de Ilustração de São João da Madeira. Em 2016, foi seleccionado para o Catálogo Ibero-Americano de Ilustração e, em 2017, ganhou um Gold Award, An Illustrated Book of Plants: To sprout, bloom, and fruit, Thesif Award, Seoul Illustration Fair, Seoul. Em 2021 e 2022 foi distinguido com um Merit Award pela 3×3 Magazine e venceu o Grande Prémio da 3º Bienal de Ilustração de Guimarães. Em 2022 e 2023 foi reconhecido, respectivamente, pela Creative Quarterly e Communication Arts. Em 2024 foi distinguido com um prémio de excelência pela Communication Arts.
Sebastião Peixoto was born in 1972 in Braga. He holds a degree in painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Porto and a master's degree in Visual Arts from FBAUP/FPCEUP. He works as a freelance illustrator, collaborating with several national and international publishers. He has published work in several fanzines, magazines, and newspapers, and regularly participates in group painting and illustration exhibitions in Portugal and abroad. In 2014, he received an Honorable Mention at the 7th International Illustration Meeting of São João da Madeira. In 2016, he was selected for the Ibero-American Illustration Catalog, and in 2017, he won a Gold Award, "An Illustrated Book of Plants: To sprout, bloom, and fruit," Thesif Award, Seoul Illustration Fair, Seoul. In 2021 and 2022, he received a Merit Award from 3×3 Magazine and won the Grand Prize at the 3rd Guimarães Illustration Biennial. In 2022 and 2023, he was recognized by Creative Quarterly and Communication Arts, respectively. In 2024, he received an award of excellence from Communication Arts.
